How to Get Your Student Residency Permit in North Cyprus (2026)
Congratulations on your decision to study in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC)! You have unpacked your bags, met your roommates, and probably had your first seaside coffee. But before you get too comfortable, there is one crucial legal step you must complete: Getting your Student Residency Permit (Muhaceret).
When you enter the TRNC, passport control will stamp your passport with a short-term student entry visa (usually valid for 30 to 90 days). You must initiate your official residency process within this initial timeframe after arriving. If you let this visa expire without applying, you will be charged a heavy daily fine for overstaying!
Do not panic—the process is highly streamlined and managed online. Here is your definitive, step-by-step guide to securing your student permit without any stress.
Step 1: Get a Local TRNC Phone Number
Once you land in North Cyprus, the very first thing you need to do is buy a local SIM card (such as Turkcell or Telsim). You must have an active TRNC phone number to complete the immigration process, as the government portal uses SMS text messages for official communication and secure logins.
Step 2: Contact Your University (Mandatory After Arrival)
You cannot apply for residency until your university officially tells the government you are here.
- As soon as you arrive, go directly to your university’s International Admissions or Student Affairs office.
- Complete your academic and financial registration so you are officially an "Active Student."
- Once registered, the university acts as your primary legal sponsor. They will directly send your student details to the TRNC Immigration Department to unlock your profile in the government system.
Step 3: Register on the Government Portal
Now that you have your local phone number and your university has verified you, it is time to start your application.
- Go to the official TRNC Ministry of Interior portal: https://permissions.gov.ct.tr/signup.
- Fill out your personal details to sign up.
- Shortly after registering, the system will send your official login details and password via text message to your TRNC phone number.
- Use those details to log back into the portal.
Step 4: The Mandatory Health Test
To protect public health, the TRNC government requires all international students to undergo a standard blood test to check for infectious diseases.
- Inside the portal, navigate to the health section and make the required online payment for your medical laboratory fee. Currently, this fee is 10,300 TL.
- Once paid, the system will automatically tell you which specific local hospital or designated clinic you need to visit.
- Go to the assigned hospital to give your blood sample.
- Wait for the results. It typically takes about 10 days for the hospital to confirm your blood test results and automatically upload them to your immigration portal.
Step 5: Pay the Immigration Tax & Get Your Permit!
Once your health test results come back clear and are approved in the system, you are at the final step!
- Log back into the immigration portal.
- The system will now prompt you to pay the final Student Immigration Tax, which is currently 1,490 TL.
- Once your payment is successful, your digital Student Residency Permit will be issued immediately!
How Long is the Permit Valid?
The duration of your residency permit depends entirely on when you start your studies:
- Fall Intake Students: You will be issued a permit valid for 1 Full Year.
- Spring Intake Students: You will be issued a permit valid for 6 Months.
Note: You must renew this permit every year you remain an active student!
